Gervonta is back, but a glorious procession awaits with the same sense of dread as anticipation

On Saturday night, Gervonta won a version at a third-weight world title when he broke Mario Barrios in round 11.

Although the win was significant, it came at a time where skipping across weight divisions and being reassured by skilled matchmaking and picking out available baubles has been so severely undermined that it borders upon an immateriality.

Gervonta Davis was the future of boxing in 2017, winning fights with ease and playing the role of Floyd Mayweather’s protege.

He is known as Tank. Although he is unbeaten, he may still be the future in the sport. Mayweather is still pushing his moves and pulling hard, but it has been slow for the boy from Baltimore. He did a lot of damage during his short, but very short life.

Barrios, who was unbeaten in 26 was 17 and had already finished early. Davis was short and Barrios was in front. In round eight, Mayweather was screaming from the ringside and Davis won with two knockdowns. Davis was about five to six inches shorter than Davis and was naturally lighter by around 10 pounds. Davis dropped Barrios in round 11.

It was a huge win. Davis now holds the WBA regular belt at lightweight, also known as super-lightweight. Josh Taylor unified the same division a few weeks back to make him the undisputed king. WBA creates their rules and the WBC makes belts for every occasion in boxing. It is chaos, which is a sad state.

Davis is a product of chaos. He was a child who survived a life in Baltimore’s streets. A life that consisted of living between uncles, grandparents, sofas, and homes. Your mum, dad and friends are taken away by the police or ambulance service. His survival was possible because he had been under the care of a Calvin Ford man and a boxing gym. There was still much blood, death, and very little hope.

It sounds almost like a sketch for a dark television series. Ford was the inspiration for Dennis “Cutty”, Wilson, the reformed felon and former hitman, who is also a boxing coach on The Wire.

Ford was convicted of being part the most violent and powerful drug gang in the city for a period of 10 years. Ford can still be seen in the gym with the wide-eyed boy he trained for over two decades. This is a Hollywood story.

Ford said, “I have never looked back.” Ford said, “I never looked back.” Davis also has the same kind of dazzling lines. “I was always fighting, everyday from when I was small.” Davis’s appearance in The Wire was cancelled because he needed to go to school.

Ford did his magic while the city collapsed. The Wire is brilliant, deep, and horrible. Too many of Ford’s men and boys have been killed. Tank was fortunate, do not mistake.

In their WBA Super Lightweight World Championship boxing bout in Atlanta, Gervonta and Mario Barrios are beaten by each other.

Shorty was replaced by Tank, which was a smart move for a child with short fuse. Ford can still refer to him as Shorty. In 2013, he became a professional and won his first title in 2017. His next was in 2019, while Barrios was his last. This is three world titles at different weights. No defeats, 25 wins, and 24 knockouts. It was all done in a short time. He also holds WBA belts at super feather, lightweight, and light-welter. The WBA currently has at least three world champions at each weight. The WBC prefers to have at least three or four. This is insane.

There is however a strong argument that Tank should be the number-one attraction in boxing: He is 26 years old, and it isn’t even close.

Davis was stripped of his title at the scales. There have also been issues with the police following a series of disturbances. These negatives are not just real.

A mixed feeling of fear and anticipation remains with Davis. Will he succumb the demons that are chasing him from the life he left behind. He was mentor to a Baltimore boy a few years back, having won a world championship. The plan was for him to defend his title in Baltimore with the boy on the undercard. However, the boy, Montell Pridgett was gunned down and killed. Tank was not happy. This is not the same relationship with a poor history as Mike Tyson. It is an immediate and direct link with the person who has hurt you. Tyson was a victim of his own mistakes, but Tank is protected from his physical side. Tank’s walls are thinner between his wealth and the streets.
